Day 2: Majestic Canyons and Lakes
Visit the Charyn Canyon, often referred to as Kazakhstan's equivalent of the Grand Canyon. Explore the surreal sandstone formations, including the iconic "Valley of Castles" and "Witch’s Gorge," with steep cliffs reaching up to 300 meters.
Spend about 1-1.5 hours enjoying the stunning views before heading to the village of Saty (100 km, 1.5 hours) for a hearty lunch in a charming guesthouse.
Then, make your way to Kolsai Lake (15 km, 30 minutes), known for its breathtaking views. Afterward, transfer from our comfortable minivan to a classic Soviet UAZ for an unforgettable ride along the bumpy road to Kaitindy Lake (15 km, 40 minutes).
Here, you will explore this mesmerizing lake, nestled among fir trees and mountain peaks, which was formed as a result of a rockfall a hundred years ago.
Wrap up this memorable day with a scenic drive back to the village of Saty, where you will return to the comfortable minivan for a long journey back to Almaty (280 km, approximately 4 to 4.5 hours depending on traffic).
Take the cable car to Kok-Tobe, situated at an altitude of 1130 meters above the city, offering panoramic views of Almaty and its dynamic urban landscape. Next, head to the Big Almaty Gorge for a visit to a falconry farm, where you can observe magnificent birds of prey in action and learn about the age-old nomadic traditions.
